Sagene
Not that long ago, Sagene was a proper no-go area. Workers’ tenements, long working days and short lives shaped this neighbourhood by the Akerselva river. Now, in modern Oslo, Sagene is somewhere you cycle around thinking: gosh, imagine living here.
Start the day at Emmas Bagels, and try a fresh bagel topped with cream cheese and smoked salmon – the weekend queues are proof it’s worth it. Need a dose of wellbeing? Head to Sagene Folkebad, the bathhouse that’s back from the dead thanks to Oslo Badstuforening, who’ve reopened it for the people once again. Fancy a coffee break afterwards? Stop by Hernández Oslo, home to perhaps Oslo’s most viral pastry – a classic Basque cheesecake so good it’s earned a reputation of its own. Craving proper Sicilian flavours? Pop into Ballaró Pizzeria & Rosticceria, the small yellow spot inspired by the market in Palermo. And when evening comes? Head to Cosmopolite Scene for great music and concerts. These places are in Lysløypa, so don’t forget your book!
While you’re in Sagene, don’t miss a few other gems: sneak into Sagene church and maybe play a little piano, grill at the communal barbecues outside the community hall, squeeze in a yoga class, or take a stroll through the allotment gardens by Kongsvingergata. Stop by the lovely Sagene bookshop, pick up a book, take it to a bench, and watch life pass by.
