Evita Espressobar

When a café calls itself an Espressobar with a capital E, you know it’s one of a kind. Evita has been part of the cityscape for many years—and for good reason. Over time, they’ve served quality coffee, raw cakes, coffee equipment, light bites, and a truly lovely atmosphere.

The walls seem to whisper echoes of the 70s, with tones of orange, yellow, and brown (honestly, that alone makes it worth a visit!). Elisabeth Toth started Evita 28 years ago, back when going to a café was still a relatively unfamiliar concept—people preferred to have alcohol with their cigars where they sat.

She has created a warm and diverse environment where you can come alone, meet others, and feel part of a community. We’re big fans of places that stand the test of time, and we hope to see Evita around for another 28+ years.

Fomoto

It feels like climbing a mountain—the monstrous uphill path winding alongside the waterfall past Hønselovisa’s house. After leaving the roar of the river behind, catching your breath and letting your gaze rest on the beautiful Sagene Bath, you spot them: the colorful lamps dangling from the trees. And there it is—the outdoor seating. Fomoto!

“What the F…omoto?” you might think. You’ve stumbled upon a hidden gem of a shop and café. Over a coffee and a slice of homemade cake, owner Kjartan explains the mysterious name: “It’s a combination of the names of the three founders.”

It was originally meant to be a workshop, but together with designer and illustrator Frode (also Kjartan’s partner), they realized it could become the place they had dreamed of: a beautiful neighborhood café and design shop featuring redesign, fair trade goods, vibrant colors, and weekend waffles—a perfect place to pause and breathe.

They also have a lovely shop just a few blocks away in Grünerløkka, so head there for some design browsing after your café visit!

Fuglen

Suggested drinking game: Take a sip of coffee every time the word coffee appears in this text. Good luck.

Fuglen started out as a small nest for coffee, drinks, design, and dreams of Tokyo. Then they decided to create their own magic and opened a roastery in Gamlebyen—one that smells so good even the mailman lingers in the doorway. Here, beans and ideas are blended with just as much love as caffeine, resulting in coffee that can wake up both you and the entire neighborhood.

Fuglen doesn’t like to sit still. From Gamlebyen to Universitetsgata, they leave their mark with cups filled with aesthetics and craftsmanship of the highest level. It’s not just coffee—it’s a little adventure in every sip.

Grød

What happens when you combine porridge with bold energy and nerdy curiosity? That was Lasse’s mission when he opened Denmark’s first porridge bar in 2011: to redefine what porridge can be—and to show people just how insanely good it can taste. Rooted in Nordic traditions and inspired by cuisines from around the world, they serve porridge for every meal of the day in their cozy porridge bars. In 2024, they opened their first location in Norway—right at the bottom of Grünerløkka.

Using organic, local, and seasonal ingredients, Grød serves both sweet and savory porridges, as well as oat waffles, açaí bowls, hoisin kale salad, risotto dishes, and more. They aim for zero waste—for example, today’s oatmeal becomes tomorrow’s oat waffle.

They also host monthly “social runs,” where people run together as a group and share a bowl of porridge afterwards. Because it’s about more than just porridge—it’s about bold energy and connection in every sense.

Smakeriet Kafé

Smakeriet Kafé is a small Brazilian oasis in Fredensborgveien. A couple from Brazil runs the place, serving everything with the same charm and warmth as if you were in their living room.

The biggest star? Açaí—just like it’s made in Brazil: pure, unsweetened, naturally fresh, and incredibly healthy. Alongside it, you’ll find classic Brazilian bites like coxinha (a deep-fried chicken snack shaped like a drumstick) and pão de queijo (cheese buns made with tapioca and cheese), served fresh from the oven—crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

This is a place bubbling with good energy—or “vibes,” as the professionals might say. People come here not just to eat, but to be part of something warm and a little different in the city. There’s room for regulars, passersby, and curious souls looking for a taste of Brazil.

Stop by for a cup of coffee, a smile, and maybe your first encounter with real Brazilian comfort food!

Kruttverket

At Kruttverket, you’ll find music, dance, a neighborhood pub, café, art, and spontaneous pop-ups all in one place. Did you know that most of the interior is reused? That the tableware is made by local youth? And that there’s an ongoing effort to create a sense of belonging and identity tied to the neighborhood and the heritage of the Alna River?

Honestly—what a great bunch of people. And not least: dog-friendly people. Love it!

Kruttverket is a place where history lives in the walls, but there’s still so much more to be created. And you can be part of it—whether as a participant in a workshop, an inspired visitor, or an engaged neighbor.
