Here are the wheelchair-friendly cafés in Oslo featured in Lysløypa 2026 – PART 1

We’ve created an overview of the wheelchair-friendly places featured in Lysløypa 2026! Three cheers for universal accessibility — here are the spots you can roll right into:

Disclaimer:

Before we begin, we’d like to add a small caveat. From our friends who use wheelchairs, we’ve learned that there are many different interpretations of what “accessible for people with disabilities” actually means. Some places you can roll straight into, some have a ramp but no wheelchair-accessible restroom, and so on. Because of this, this guide won’t be completely watertight. Even if it’s difficult to create a guide with an official “stamp of approval,” that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try. Please welcome our attempt ❤️

Kruttverket

Since the 1700s, the old factory by the Alna River has served as a crofter’s farm, a gunpowder mill, a planing mill, a horseshoe nail factory (!), and a paint factory.

Then it stood empty. For a long time. And buildings shouldn’t stand empty.

Thankfully, the team behind Kroloftet stepped in. Now, Kruttverket offers music, dance, a neighborhood pub, café, art, and spontaneous pop-ups.

Did you know that most of the interior is reused? That the tableware is made by local youth? And that there’s a dedicated effort to create a sense of belonging and identity connected to the neighborhood and the heritage carried by the Alna River?

Honestly — what wonderful people.

There’s also a sauna on site. A new friend might be waiting just around the corner. The pastries are fresh. The city feels full of possibility.

Kruttverket carries a lot of history within its walls — but there’s still so much history left to create. And you can be part of it: as a course participant, an inspired visitor, or an engaged neighbor.

Oh — and yes, you can bring your dog.

Pan by Bread N Butter

Did you know that 9 out of 10 Norwegians are planning to vacation in Japan in 2026? We haven’t fact-checked that — but it kind of feels true, so let’s roll with it.

In times of rising prices, a more affordable alternative for new cultural encounters can be a great idea. So here’s one: Pan, located by Storo Storsenter.

Pan by Bread N Butter is a charming and cozy brunch café offering a small slice of Japanese food culture through classics like Katsu Sando, bao buns, Japanese cheesecake, and matcha cookies. Everything is handmade in their own bakery.

The café was created to share the founders’ Asian roots through something as universal as baked goods — while also building bridges between cultures. Welcome, whether you grew up with Japanese milk bread or Norwegian skolebrød.

Galgen

I believe in Galgen — the legendary place. Born in a wooden house in Vålerenga, closed and laid to rest in 2020. Entered into the darker chapters of the city’s history book — and risen again in 2025, now at Galgeberg 3.

I believe in informal vibes, in life after lunch, and in eternal dinner — as long as the kitchen is open.

The point is this: the neighborhood restaurant Galgen has been resurrected. The greengrocer at Galgeberg moved one step to the right to make room for the dearly missed restaurant. As always, they deliver impeccable atmosphere, sun-soaked outdoor seating, juicy burgers, and their loyal regulars.

We’re crossing our fingers that weekend brunch and “komle Thursday” will follow Galgen’s — and Jesus’ — example and rise again.

Kafe Republik

Not long ago, social media was buzzing with rumors, photos, and videos of an affordable, seriously tasty steak with pepper sauce — served with fries on the side. The rumors were true. At the everyday bistro Kafe Republik, located as centrally as it gets, you can enjoy exactly that for under 200 NOK.

But this place is so much more than its steak.

The concept is cool and simple: good food at honest, affordable prices — everything under 200 NOK. The dishes are small and meant for sharing, which, let’s be honest, is the best way to eat.

Like any great bistro, the menu changes with the seasons. You’ll almost always find some kind of pan-fried fish, a perfectly fermented or pickled vegetable, and classic bistro snacks like olives, cheese, cured meats — and the ultimate small dish: bread with butter.

Next time you stop by, go for both the tiramisu and the chocolate mousse with caramel popcorn. With Lysløypa, you get 2-for-1 on dessert and coffee — hooray!

Fuglen Gamlebyen

First came the coffee bird — with its excellent coffee, bold drinks, and a deep love for design and Tokyo. Then came the dream of their own coffee roastery. That dream was carried forward by Joakim Hannibal and Ludvik Hopstock. And then came the realization of that dream: their very own roastery in Gamlebyen.

The beans are roasted on Tim Wendelboe’s former Probat machine — the very one Joakim originally used when he began his career as a coffee roaster with Tim Wendelboe.

As you can tell — there’s no shortage of expertise here. This is the top tier of the coffee world coming together to dream big, together.

Just as Fuglen once opened a coffee bar in an unexpected location, the roastery in Gamlebyen continues to carve out new coffee paths in the city. It’s well worth a trip to Gamlebyen — and worth following Fuglen’s journey.

Here, aesthetics, coffee, and craftsmanship meet at sky-high levels — exactly what you’d expect from this crew.
