Tim Wendelboe

Tim Wendelboe is undeniably a giant when it comes to great coffee. Remember the legendary story about how they once refused to serve milk in their coffee, because it could interfere with the pure taste of the beans?

Back when we were students, we bought their “fail roast” — discounted, beautiful coffee beans that didn’t turn out exactly as planned, but which to us mere mortals tasted like pure perfection. It was a small luxury, a taste of craftsmanship during a financially modest chapter of life.

Wendelboe, located on a corner in Grünerløkka, is a true coffee institution. Here, autumn leaves have swept past, winter darkness has wrapped around us, spring has arrived, and summer nights have felt endless — and Tim Wendelboe’s grinders just keep on turning.

If you want a real aha-moment when it comes to flavor, expertise, and love for coffee, you simply have to visit. Yes, you may have to stand in a long line — breathing in all the wonderful aromas and waiting your turn — but it is so incredibly worth it.

Supreme Roastworks

Norwegians drink an average of three cups of coffee every single day. Luckily, more and more places in Oslo are making truly great coffee. Take a trip to Supreme Roastworks — they have world champions in coffee brewing on their team.

The crew behind Supreme has been roasting coffee beans for cafés and restaurants for years, and thankfully they’ve also run their own café for quite some time.

And PS — the Grünerløkka location has its own roastery, so you might even sneak a peek at how the perfect bean is roasted.

We promise truly great coffee and highly skilled people behind the machine. And a water bowl for your dog!

Kuro

Kuro is in top form these days. The café has been featured in Dutch Vogue, described as minimalism at its very best. Kuro is a remedy for bad days and low moods — and if you stop by Rathkes gate 9, you can take part in whatever is unfolding inside the green-painted building.

Their coffee comes from Kokko Coffee Roastery in Stavanger — a truly skilled crew who really know their craft. Good coffee on the shelves will take you far, but with talented baristas behind the machine, you get fireworks throughout your whole body.

Kuro also serves Empress, a range of fermented drinks in all shapes and colors. Quality across the board. Combine the flavors with what’s happening in the space — Kuro hosts intimate concerts, exhibitions, and spontaneous pop-ups — and you may just have found your new favorite spot in Oslo.

Welcome to Kuro!

Papegøye

At the beginning of 2024, Neongrut changed its name to Papegøye! Friends Anton and Adil chose the new name because they feel it represents everything they love about their place — including their guests.

“Parrots come in all colors and shapes, they rock most hairstyles, parrots speak every language, they dance, they can fly, they’re communicative and intelligent. A parrot can be majestic, it can be small and cute, they’re social creatures that can live to be over 100 years old,” the two explain.

Together they run a coffee bar during the day and serve cocktails and wine in the evening. It’s a 100% plant-based concept that collaborates with local Norwegian coffee roasteries, and in the wine bar you’ll find natural wines from unexpected countries. The level here is high.

Anton has coached two of Papegøye’s baristas to victory in the Norwegian Championships, each in their own coffee discipline. In other words, you’ll find multiple Norwegian champions in the craft of coffee at Papegøye.

Fuglen – Gamlebyen & Sentrum

First came the coffee bird, with its great coffee, bold cocktails, and a deep love of design and Tokyo. Then came the dream of their own coffee roastery. That was a dream Joakim Hannibal and Ludvik Hopstock simply decided to pursue. And then came the realization of that dream — they now run their own roastery in Gamlebyen.

Tim Wendelboe’s former Probat roaster is used to roast the beans — the very same machine Joakim originally worked on when he began his career as a coffee roaster at Wendelboe. As you can imagine, there’s no shortage of expertise here. This is the top tier of the coffee world coming together to dream big — and to make those dreams happen.

Just as the Coffee Bird first opened a café in a slightly unexpected location, Fuglen Roastery continues to carve out new coffee paths in the city. It’s well worth the trip to Gamlebyen — and well worth following Fuglen’s journey. Here you’ll find aesthetics, coffee, and craftsmanship at the highest level, exactly what you’d expect from this crew.

Evita Espressobar

When a café is called Espressobar with a capital E, you know it’s one of a kind. Evita has been part of the cityscape for many years, and they’ve truly earned their place. Over time, they’ve served quality coffee, raw cakes, coffee equipment, small bites, and a genuinely lovely atmosphere.

The walls seem to whisper echoes of the 1970s, in shades of orange, yellow, and brown. (It’s worth stopping by for that alone!) The general manager is a firecracker who greets you like an old friend. And you might quickly become one, because Evita is the kind of place you return to.

We cheer for places that stay in the city for the long run, and we hope to see Evita around for many years to come.
