Pan by Bread N Butter

Did you know that 9 out of 10 Norwegians want to travel to Japan in 2026? We haven’t fact-checked that—but it kind of feels true, so let’s go with it. With rising costs, a more budget-friendly way to explore new cultures can be pretty appealing—so here’s our tip: Pan at Storo!

Pan by Bread N Butter is a charming and cozy brunch café offering a small taste of Japanese food culture through classics like katsu sando, bao buns, Japanese cheesecake, and matcha cookies. Everything is handmade in their own bakery.

The concept was created to share the founders’ Asian roots through something as universal as baked goods—but also to build bridges between cultures. You’re warmly welcome here, whether you grew up with Japanese milk bread or Norwegian school buns.

Hakone

At Hakone Coffee, you’ll experience a taste of Japan right in the heart of Oslo. Inspired by Japanese coffee culture and named after the town of Hakone—known for its hot springs, stunning surroundings, and views of Mount Fuji—this café offers its own kind of “hot spring”: a source of Japanese aesthetics and world-class coffee that’s easy to get hooked on.

You can choose from coffee sourced from over ten roasteries, several of them ranked among the best in the world. Maybe you’ll fall for their strawberry hōjicha latte (made with the exclusive Japanese tea variety hōjicha)? Or perhaps a mango matcha latte? The menu is both high-level and playful, with a wide variety of fun and creative drinks.

The owners are committed to keeping their environmental footprint as low as possible, and some of the furniture is even made from coffee waste. That’s something we love!!

Enjoy your coffee!! Or as they say in Japanese: コーヒーをお楽しみください (Kōhī o o-tanoshimi kudasai)

Hernández Oslo

Hernández Oslo is a charming neighborhood café with a Spanish twist. Here you can enjoy great coffee—or try a matcha latte—but most importantly: don’t leave without tasting their signature dish, the Basque cheesecake!

Owner Diego Gil Hernández is a pastry chef from Barcelona. Passionate about food, he previously worked at Pascal and Sommerro before going all in on his dream of opening his own place. Hernández Oslo opened in the summer of 2024.

You might already have tasted Diego’s cakes at markets like Floke and Kruttverket. Now you know exactly where to go when the craving hits—for a cheesecake that’s silky smooth and creamy on the inside, caramelized and crustless on the outside. Mouthwatering, right? And if you want more (which you will), you can even order whole cakes through their website and enjoy them at home.

Kaffe Lykke

At Dælenenga, just a stone’s throw from Rodeløkka, you’ll find a rather ordinary–extraordinary café. Kaffe Lykke is not only a warm and welcoming neighborhood spot, but also an initiative that provides job training for young adults. The goal is to help as many people as possible into regular employment, and their motto is that everyone has something to contribute and deserves a chance. Agreed!

With great guidance from Eivind and Vibeke, who run the café, they serve delicious homemade lunches, sandwiches, cakes, and coffee at friendly prices. As a little bonus for early birds, they open at 8 AM Monday to Friday. From 11:00 to 13:30, they serve a daily hot lunch, with the weekly menu posted on social media at the start of each week. And yes—the prices are great too!

Eivind and Vibeke are proud to act as a bridge for many people entering the workforce. That’s something we truly need more of.

Kiosk Oslo

Along the road at Galgeberg lies what might be some people’s worst nightmare: a gas station transformed into a hip and stylish coffee bar. What used to sit wall-to-wall with the mechanics’ smoking room is now Oslo’s smallest coffee kiosk! The cherry on top? It’s housed in a little architectural gem, designed by architect Paul Hoel in 1935.

This independent spot works with independent suppliers—often local—and has become a meeting place for the entire Vålerenga neighborhood, with as many as 56 co-owners from the local community. In just eleven square meters, they serve pastries and coffee made from locally roasted beans by Jacu and other nearby roasteries.

Kiosk Oslo is queer-friendly, family-friendly, and dog-friendly—a safe and welcoming space for everyone. The sense of community is strong here, with events like plant markets, concerts, and bike repair workshops, often with proceeds going to humanitarian aid in Gaza.

Pump coffee, not gas. Coffee is the real black gold!

Mjøl

You’ve probably guessed by now that the Lysløypa crew has a soft spot for initiatives you can put the word “neighborhood” in front of. The quality bakery Mjøl has opened three such “neighborhood” bakeries—one in Homansbyen, one in Sagene, and one at Carl Berner. Their main goal is to be part of the cityscape, contribute to good vibes in the local communities—and, of course, serve seriously delicious baked goods.

Here, sweet buns and pastries are held in high regard, but so are inclusion and a strong presence in the neighborhood—for example, by sponsoring baked goods for the local marching band!

Mjøl also serves breakfast from 7 AM on weekdays and from 8 AM on weekends, offering a solid and satisfying morning selection. So get out there and support your local neighborhood spots!
