    Text: Nora K. Sæter

The first time I went to Black Box theater, it was to “see” a performance about sleep. We got to lie on mattresses and listen to a meditative sound and music installation—and it was totally fine to fall asleep if you needed to. The second time, it was to watch a drag-inspired dance performance. In other words: you never really know what you’re going to get in the black box, and that’s exactly how it should be.

Black Box was founded in 1985, is located centrally at Rodeløkka, and is a theater dedicated to the field of independent performing arts. Here, you can experience professional contemporary performing arts from both Norway and abroad, where delicate and not-so-delicate works are presented in all their diversity: theater, dance, performance, and interdisciplinary productions that may also include music and visual art. Every March, they also host a festival! The cherry on top? There’s a bar and a bookstore too!
