I would argue that how Oslo is surrounded by forest (or “marka” as we call it), and how accessible it is, is one of the most unique and fantastic things about Oslo! In “marka” you’ll find hiking trails and in winter: cross country ski trails! Many of them are lit up, and referred to as “lysløypa” (!); light trail!
In Nordmarka you’ll find Kikutstua, a gem! On cross country skis it’s about 30 kilometers from Sognsvann, a bit shorter from Frognerseteren. The trip can be demanding (we know!) but the REWARD awaits! At Kikutstua, run by the couple Susanne and Einar + their dog Sting, and owned by Skiforeningen, you can enjoy the fireplace, relax in a heated sauna, enjoy some freshly made bakeries, ooooor plan to stay a while (we recommend spending the night) and pre-book their fantastic 3-course dinner.
Do it! Pack your backpack, 1-2-3, go! You can thank us and Susanne, Einar, Sting, and Skiforeningen (for all the trails they prep) later!
