The locals’ guide to Oslo - with Noman Mubashir

You'll quickly discover the city's hidden (and not-so-hidden) gems with a little help from the locals. Four Oslo residents who know the city in and out share their top tips on food, culture, and passionate individuals to check out in Oslo.

Noman Mubashir is a journalist and TV host

Noman has worked 27 years at NRK as a journalist, and is also a conference host, author, and public speaker. Many of his passions revolve around LGBTQ+ rights, mental health, and the fight against racism and discrimination. He also regularly publishes opinion pieces in major Norwegian online newspapers.

Where do you go when you need to feel included and full of love in Oslo?

Papegøye in Tøyengata is a warm, laid-back, and inclusive place where queer and straight, dark and light-skinned, young and old, Muslims and atheists, trans people and many other minority groups can enjoy the city’s best coffee and delicious vegan pastries! New Delhi at Tjuvholmen is my favorite Indian restaurant in Oslo, known for its diversity and warm welcome to everyone, especially during Pride and holidays. But for me, the absolute highlight of the year is the Pride Festival. It feels like being in one big, colorful village where everyone can be proud of who they are without fear or judgmental looks!

Lift up someone who’s done something important or good for our city!

Dan Bjørke, head of Oslo Pride, is doing a fantastic job. He is clear, warm, welcoming, and deeply engaged with Oslo’s diverse population. I admire that he seeks dialogue with everyone and rarely goes into conflict mode. That’s something we need more of in today’s polarized world.

If you were mayor of Oslo for a day, what would you decide?

I would create a large cultural center where queer people can feel at home all year round. With several cafés (including for those under 18), its own cinema, drag stage, theater, sports hall, gym, quiet rooms for meditation or prayer, family rooms, shops, and an art workshop. And not least, a safe, discreet space for those who need it. That would be the dream.
